Known disparagingly as the Pacific Trash Vortex, an island of plastic debris is floating and growing in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and California

This new island is characterized by high concentrations of plastic, chemical sludge and miscellaneous debris. The plastic island is an open sea phenomenon borne of the large rotating ocean currents designated as the North Pacific Gyre.

It takes less than a year for pollutants from the east coast of Asia to reach the pelagic (open sea) island, Currents running from the west coast of North America take longer to reach the gyre, up to six years.  Cruise ship solid organic waste is also believed to contribute significantly to growth of the island.
